Big Brother 9 is the ninth edition of the American reality television series Big Brother, scheduled to air on the CBS television network on February 12th, 2008. CBS held casting calls from November 17, 2007 to December 8, 2007, and announced that Julie Chen would return as host, and Allison Grodner and Rich Meehan as executive producers.^[1]

Following the 2007-2008 Writers Guild of America strike, the trade magazine Variety reported that CBS, in response, was considering airing a winter edition of Big Brother, and that the network was beginning to cast auditions.^[2] Several sites speculated that the winter edition could have been an American version of Celebrity Big Brother^[2][3][4][5] but this was untrue as CBS released a statement that the next edition of Big Brother would be a regular season following the format of past editions.^[1]

CBS announced on December 3, 2007 that Big Brother 9 would premiere Tuesday, February 12, 2008 at 9/8c. Subsequent episodes would begin airing on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at 8/7c and Sunday, February 17, 2008.^[6][7][8]

On January 8, 2008 Showtime announced it was teaming up again with CBS to air Big Brother: After Dark. It would return to Showtime 2 for Big Brother 9. Big Brother: After Dark would begin airing on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at 12 AM and end at 3 AM and would air seven nights a week.^[9]

The series will also be shown in the United Kingdom on E4 airing two one-hour episodes on Thursday nights and one one-hour episode on Tuesday nights, the first will be shown on February 14.^{[citation needed]}

Seasonal rankings (based on average total viewers per episode) of the United States version of Big Brother on CBS.

Note: Each U.S. network television season starts in late September and ends in late May, which coincides with the completion of May sweeps.

Normally Big Brother airs in the summer and does not have ranks for past seasons. This is the first Big Brother to air during an official network television season.

On Thursday, December 27, 2007, Robyn Kass, the casting director for Big Brother 9, announced that the finalists for the show have been chosen in the following statement:

If you did not receive a call remember.... just because you're not right for the mix this season doesn't mean you won't be right for the next season. Don't give up! For the first time, there will be 16 HouseGuests competing for the $500,000 grand prize. ^[11]
